Battle between police and kidnappers

Two foreigners, Jules Paty Louis and Regis Pral were kidnapped in Artizo. The kidnapping of Regis Pral, the son of a very rich industrialist from Valence, created a diplomatic incident between the one-time Prime Minister, Francesco Crispi, and the Sardinian authorities. Crispi ordered that the affair should be resolved; Regis Pral got his freedom without the ransom being paid, thanks to Giovanni Corbeddu Salis, one of the most ruthless bandits in the region.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from the 1890s, we witness a tense and chaotic scene unfolding in the small Italian town of Artizo. Two foreigners, Jules Paty Louis and Regis Pral, have been kidnapped by local bandits, igniting a diplomatic incident between the Italian government and the Sardinian authorities. Regis Pral, the son of a wealthy industrialist from Valence in France, was the more high-profile victim. His kidnapping created significant international attention, as his father was a prominent figure in French industry. The Italian government, under the leadership of one-time Prime Minister Francesco Crispi, felt pressure to resolve the situation swiftly and effectively. The photograph captures the intense moment as Italian police and the local bandits engage in a fierce battle. The police, armed and determined, charge towards the kidnappers, who are seen brandishing weapons and shielding their captives. The scene is chaotic, with smoke rising from the gunfire and bystanders fleeing for cover. However, the outcome of this battle was not what one might expect. Regis Pral was released without the payment of a ransom, thanks to the intervention of Giovanni Corbeddu Salis, one of the most ruthless bandits in the region. Salis, who had reportedly been involved in the kidnapping, had a change of heart and negotiated for Pral's release directly with Crispi. The diplomatic incident was resolved, but the incident served as a reminder of the lawlessness and violence that could still be found in parts of Italy in the late 19th century. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Italian history and the complex web of power, politics, and crime that defined the era.
