EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense and intellectual gaze of Alexander Hamilton, one of the most influential figures in American history. Born out of wedlock in Charleston, Nevis, in 1757, Hamilton overcame adversity to become a key architect of the American financial system and a founding father. Hamilton's early life was marked by poverty and hardship. He was sent to America as a teenager to work for a merchant, but his thirst for knowledge led him to teach himself and eventually attend King's College (now Columbia University). He went on to study law and was admitted to the bar in 1783. In the years that followed, Hamilton served as George Washington's aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War, and later became the first Secretary of the Treasury under Washington's presidency. In this role, Hamilton implemented a bold plan to pay off the national debt, establish a national bank, and create a stable currency. His financial reforms laid the foundation for America's economic growth and prosperity. Despite his many accomplishments, Hamilton's tenure in government was not without controversy. He engaged in a bitter feud with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison over the role of the federal government and the issue of states' rights. In 1804, Hamilton was fatally wounded in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. This portrait, taken in the years before Hamilton's death, captures the intensity and determination that defined his life. Hamilton's legacy continues to shape American history, and his story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of strong leadership.
