Muscicapa Melanops. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Muscicapa Melanops. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, titled "Muscicapa Melanops. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains". The enchanting artwork takes us back to a time when John Gould, renowned as the bird-stuffer of the Zoological Society, became infatuated with avian species from the East. Intrigued by a collection of birds that arrived at the society's museum in the late 1820s, Gould conceived a remarkable idea: to publish an imperial folio-sized volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. This ambitious project led him to collaborate with talented artist Elizabeth Gould, who meticulously created stunning drawings transferred onto large lithographic stones known today as "Gould plates". The Muscicapa Melanops illustration is just one example of their extraordinary work. It portrays an Asian bird native to the majestic Himalayan mountains—a true symbol of exotic beauty. The attention to detail in this early nineteenth-century piece is astounding; every feather seems alive with color and texture. As we gaze upon this close-up view, we are transported into a world where natural history meets artistry. The background adds depth and dimension while emphasizing both the bizarre and fascinating aspects of animal behavior and markings.
