EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Waldenses, a religious sect that faced intense persecution during the reign of King Louis XIV of France and his Italian allies in the late 17th century. The Waldenses, also known as the Valdesians or Waldensians, were a Protestant group that had emerged in the Alpine regions of Italy and France during the 12th century. They were named after their founder, Waldo, a wealthy merchant from Lyon who renounced his wealth and devoted himself to preaching the Gospel. The Waldenses were considered heretics by the Catholic Church, and their refusal to conform to Catholic doctrine led to a series of brutal persecutions. In 1688, the situation for the Waldenses reached a boiling point when King Louis XIV, determined to eradicate heresy from his kingdom, ordered a military campaign against them. The image depicts the Waldenses as they flee from their homes in the Balsille Valley, located in the present-day Aosta Valley in Italy. The valley was a stronghold of Waldensian faith, and the inhabitants were subjected to relentless attacks by the French and Italian troops. The Waldenses were forced to leave their homes and communities, leaving behind all their possessions, and seek refuge in Switzerland and Germany. The flight of the Waldenses was a tragic and traumatic event, with many losing their lives during the journey. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the persecution and suffering endured by this religious community during a tumultuous period in European history. The Waldenses continued to face persecution for centuries, but their resilience and determination to preserve their faith ultimately led to their survival and recognition as a distinct Protestant denomination.
