EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Markham, a distinguished figure in the annals of the Royal Navy, in the year 1893. At the time, Markham held the commanding position of the Second Division of the Mediterranean Squadron aboard HMS Camperdown. The image, taken around December of that year, offers a glimpse into the regal bearing and authoritative presence of this naval leader. However, the tranquil scene belies the tumultuous events that had unfolded just months earlier. On June 22, 1893, Markham's squadron was present during a tragic incident in the Mediterranean Sea. HMS Victoria, a British battleship, sank after an explosion during a fleet review, resulting in the loss of over 350 lives. Markham's division was nearby, and though they attempted to render assistance, they were unable to prevent the disaster. This historical photograph is an important reminder of Markham's role during a pivotal moment in maritime history. As the Second Division Commander, he would have been deeply affected by the sinking of HMS Victoria, and his leadership during this time would have been crucial. The image stands as a testament to the complexities of naval command and the human cost of maritime conflicts.
