Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Nicosia, Government House ruins
The exterior of Government House in Nicosia, Cyprus, after its destruction by fire on the night of 21 October 1931. The fire was the culmination of a demonstration by 5000 supporters of enosis - the union of Cyprus with Greece. The entire building, the official residence of the Governor of Cyprus Sir Ronald Storrs, was destroyed, along with his collection of many priceless artefacts and works of art, as well as Government archives. In the foreground can be seen an overturned, burned out motor car, one of several official cars which also fell victim to the rioters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ruins of Government House in Nicosia, Cyprus, following the destructive fire that engulfed the building on the night of 21 October 1931. The fire was the culmination of a massive demonstration by approximately 5,000 supporters of Enosis, the movement advocating for the union of Cyprus with Greece. The entire edifice, serving as the official residence of the British Governor of Cyprus, Sir Ronald Storrs, was reduced to rubble. Along with the loss of Sir Ronald's personal collection of priceless artefacts and works of art, the Government archives were also destroyed. In the foreground lies an overturned, burned-out motor car, one of several official vehicles that fell victim to the rioters. This historical image stands as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous political climate in Cyprus during the early 20th century and the profound impact of the Enosis movement on the island's history.
