EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 1860s print captures the enchanting and historic Chateau-du-Roi-Rene in Provencal Tarascon, France. Nestled along the Rhone River, this magnificent fortress has stood the test of time, bearing witness to the rich history and legendary tales of the region. In the annals of Provencal folklore, the Chateau-du-Roi-Rene is inextricably linked to the fearsome Tarasque monster. According to the myth, this terrifying beast once menaced the town, wreaking havoc and instilling fear among the inhabitants. To put an end to the monster's reign of terror, the people of Tarascon turned to their brave and cunning leader, Roi Rene of Anjou. Roi Rene, a wise and just ruler, devised a clever plan to outwit the Tarasque. He ordered his people to build a procession, complete with musicians, dancers, and revelers, to lure the monster from its lair. As the procession approached the creature, the musicians played loud and joyful music, confusing and disorienting the Tarasque. Seizing the opportunity, Roi Rene and his soldiers attacked the monster, slaying it and freeing the town from its grasp. To this day, the people of Tarascon celebrate their victory over the Tarasque with an annual procession, reenacting the events of that fateful day. This tradition serves as a reminder of the power of courage, unity, and the enduring spirit of the people of Provence. The Chateau-du-Roi-Rene, with its storied past and picturesque setting, continues to captivate visitors from around the world. This print, with its intricate details and rich history, offers a glimpse into the enchanting world of Provencal legend and the indomitable spirit of the people who call this land home.
