EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard captures the aftermath of the devastating fire that swept through several pavilions at the Exposition Universelle et Internationale in Brussels, Belgium, in August 1910. The international exhibition, which ran from April 2nd to November 1st of that year, attracted millions of visitors from around the world to marvel at the latest technological and cultural advancements. But on the 14th and 15th of August, tragedy struck when a fire broke out in the market area of the fair, quickly spreading to the nearby pavilions. The flames gutted several structures, leaving behind a scene of ruins and devastation. The remains of the charred pavilions are depicted in this postcard, with the smoky sky providing a stark contrast to the vibrant colors and activity that once filled the fairgrounds. The Exposition Universelle et Internationale, also known as the Brussels World's Fair, was a significant cultural and commercial event in European history. This postcard serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the enduring impact of fire on the built environment.
