EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken in March 1862, we witness a significant moment in the annals of archaeological discovery: the unearthing of a mummy during an excavation at the ancient site of Gournah, near Thebes in Egypt. The prince of Wales, Edward, stands in the foreground, his fascinated gaze fixed on the unveiled mummy, as scholars and workmen look on with equal intrigue. Edward, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, was a keen traveler and explorer, and his interest in Egyptology was well documented. He had embarked on a tour of the Middle East, accompanied by his trusted advisor, Sir Reginald Heber Palmer, and a team of archaeologists and scholars. The group had been making their way through the sands of Egypt, uncovering relics of the ancient civilization that had once flourished there. The site of Gournah, located on the west bank of the Nile, was a particularly rich source of archaeological treasures. The team had been working diligently to uncover the remains of a temple dedicated to the god Amun, and it was here, amidst the ruins, that they made their most exciting discovery: a well-preserved mummy, believed to date back to the New Kingdom period. The discovery of this mummy was a major coup for the archaeological community, and the presence of the prince of Wales only added to the excitement. The photograph captures a moment of wonder and discovery, as the prince and his companions marvel at the ancient relic before them, a reminder of the rich history that lay buried beneath the sands of Egypt. This photograph, taken over 150 years ago, remains a testament to the enduring allure of Egypt and its ancient mysteries, and the importance of archaeological exploration in uncovering the secrets of the past.
