EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting print from the early 19th century, dated around 1810, showcases a delightful trio of traditional European dolls: Harlequin, Pulcinello (also known as Punch), and Bobeche (or Polichinelle). These charming figures, dressed in vibrant costumes and intricate patterns, represent the rich history of clowning and theatrical traditions that have captivated audiences for centuries. Harlequin, depicted in the center, is easily recognizable by his diamond-shaped mask and colorful, patterned breeches. His character originated in the Commedia dell'Arte, an improvisational theatre form popular in Italy during the Renaissance. Harlequin was known for his agility, wit, and mischievousness, often outsmarting his adversaries with his cleverness. To his left stands Pulcinello, also known as Punch. This clown character is easily identified by his large, red nose and traditional puppet-like features. Originating in Italy, Pulcinello was a popular figure in commedia dell'arte and later became a staple of Punch and Judy shows. Known for his violent and chaotic behavior, Pulcinello was a source of both fear and amusement for audiences. On the right, we find Bobeche, or Polichinelle. This clown character is often depicted as a hapless and clumsy figure, easily falling victim to the pranks of Harlequin and Pulcinello. Bobeche's costume, featuring a multicolored hat and striped breeches, is reminiscent of the traditional attire of the commedia dell'arte performers. This beautiful print not only offers a glimpse into the history of European clowning traditions but also serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of these iconic characters. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of their costumes add to the charm and allure of this image.
