EDITORS COMMENTS
Great photo capturing the determination and focus of Italian racing driver Lella Lombardi during the 1975 German Grand Prix at the iconic Nurburgring circuit in West Germany. Lombardi made history as the second woman to qualify for a Formula One (F1) race, following in the footsteps of Maria Teresa de Filippis. Her seventh-place finish in this race remains the highest finish ever by a female driver in the F1 World Championship. Lombardi's achievement was a remarkable feat, considering the male-dominated nature of motorsport during that era. Her tenacity and skill behind the wheel earned her a total of 12 starts in 17 Grand Prix entries, making her the female driver with the most appearances in the F1 series. This image, taken on August 3, 1975, by Colorsport Images, captures Lombardi's intense concentration as she navigates the challenging Nurburgring circuit. The photo is a testament to her unwavering commitment to her craft and her groundbreaking contributions to women in motorsport. Lombardi's legacy continues to inspire future generations of female racing drivers, paving the way for their success in the world of F1 and beyond.
