EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the dashing figure of record-breaking pilot Jim Mollison, taken during the interwar period of aviation history. Known for his daring feats in civil aircraft, Mollison's name became synonymous with pushing the boundaries of flight. His achievements were not without competition, however, as he was married to another record-breaking aviator, Amy Johnson. Nicknamed the 'Flying Sweethearts,' their union was a tale of passion and rivalry. Both Mollison and Johnson were driven by an insatiable desire to outdo each other in the skies. Their marriage, once a symbol of love and partnership, began to unravel as their competitive spirits clashed. The pressure to break each other's records took a toll on their relationship, ultimately leading to their divorce in 1938. In this photograph, Mollison is seen in his element, standing next to his aircraft with a confident and determined expression. The RAF Museum's collection holds this precious piece of history, reminding us of an era when the skies were a playground for the brave and the daring. The interwar period was a time of innovation and exploration in aviation, and Jim Mollison was a pioneer who left an indelible mark on the annals of flight history.
