EDITORS COMMENTS
The Day Begins, LMS poster, 1946 captures the essence of a bustling morning at the Willesden depot in London. This stunning print showcases the meticulous maintenance of the locomotive City of Hereford on a turntable, surrounded by an array of impressive LMS engines. Created by Terence Cuneo, a renowned artist and son of Cyrus and Nell Cuneo, this artwork reflects his exceptional talent and attention to detail. Cuneo's artistic journey began at Chelsea and Slade Art Schools where he honed his skills before embarking on a prolific career designing railway posters. However, his talents extended far beyond that realm as he also painted remarkable portraits including those of royalty and explored ceremonial and military subjects. In this image, we are transported back in time to witness the industrious atmosphere within the depot. The soft hues evoke the early morning light while highlighting every intricate aspect of these magnificent machines. From steam billowing from their chimneys to workers diligently tending to their maintenance needs, every element is meticulously portrayed. This print not only pays homage to the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) but also serves as a testament to Cuneo's ability to capture both technical precision and artistic beauty in one frame. It is truly a masterpiece that transports us into an era when railways were at their peak.
