EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the convicts chapel onboard the Defence, one of the Woolwich hulks moored in the Thames Estuary during the mid-19th century. The Woolwich hulks, a collection of decommissioned ships repurposed as prison vessels, served as a place of confinement for convicts and paupers who were deemed a threat to society or unable to support themselves. The Defence, a former Royal Navy frigate, was converted into a hulk in the 1840s and could accommodate up to 1,200 inmates. The convicts chapel, a small, makeshift structure built on the ship's deck, was where religious services were held for the incarcerated population. The chaplain, often a volunteer, would provide spiritual guidance and solace to the convicts, offering them a glimmer of hope amidst their harsh and unforgiving surroundings. The Woolwich hulks were a stark reminder of the social and moral issues of the time, with many questioning the morality of confining large numbers of people in such cramped and unsanitary conditions. The conditions onboard the hulks were notoriously poor, with diseases such as typhus and scurvy common among the inmates. Despite the challenging circumstances, the convicts chapel onboard the Defence stood as a symbol of hope and resilience, offering a small reprieve from the harsh realities of life on the hulks. This photograph, taken in 1862, provides a glimpse into a dark chapter of British history, shedding light on the plight of the convicts and the importance of spiritual support in the face of adversity.
