EDITORS COMMENTS
A Unique Coincidence: The Launch of RMS Titanic on the Joint Birthday of Lord and Lady Pirrie, May 31, 1911 This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the launch of the RMS Titanic at Belfast Harbour on May 31, 1911. The launch, which took place on the joint birthday of Lord and Lady Pirrie, added an extra layer of significance to the event. Lord Pirrie, a prominent figure in the shipping industry as the head of Harland & Wolff shipbuilders, and Lady Pirrie (née Margaret Carlisle) graced the occasion with their presence. The RMS Titanic, a White Star Line luxury liner, was the largest and most luxurious ship of its time. The financing for the White Star Line, which owned the Titanic, came from American financier, Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan. Morgan's company provided the necessary funds for the construction of the magnificent vessel. Lord and Lady Pirrie, who are depicted inset in the photograph, are seen here proudly observing the launch of their creation. The coincidence of their birthdays added a special charm to the occasion, making it a day to remember for the Pirries and the entire shipping community. This photograph, taken by the Illustrated London News Ltd, is a testament to the unique circumstances surrounding the launch of the RMS Titanic and the role played by Lord and Lady Pirrie in the maritime history.
