His autograph inscribed on the bottom right corner of the image dates it to his active years, between 1855 and 1870. Brassey's contributions to the engineering world were significant and far-reaching. He is best known for his role in the construction of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway, which opened in London in 1863.
