EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Sir Christopher Charles Teesdale (1833-1905), a distinguished soldier who served in the Royal Artillery during the late 19th century. Teesdale is depicted here in his full colonial uniform, complete with the distinctive bearskin hat and sash, signifying his rank as a colonel. The image was taken in 1893 by renowned photographer Maull, adding to the historical significance of the portrait. Born in County Durham, England, Teesdale joined the Royal Artillery in 1851, serving in various capacities throughout the British Empire. He saw action in India, Afghanistan, and Sudan, earning several decorations for his bravery and leadership. In 1878, he was appointed as the Assistant Adjutant-General of the Royal Artillery, and later became the Deputy Adjutant-General in 1886. Teesdale's military career spanned over four decades, and he played a crucial role in modernizing the Royal Artillery. He was instrumental in the development of new artillery pieces, including the 155mm gun and the 12-pounder field gun. His leadership and strategic acumen were recognized by his peers and superiors, and he was knighted in 1892 for his services to the British Army. This photograph is a testament to Teesdale's military accomplishments and his place in history as a respected and influential figure in the Royal Artillery. The image, taken by the renowned Maull studio, captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the life of a colonial officer during the late Victorian period.
