EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the historic moment of the Surrender of Jerusalem to British forces during the First World War unfolds on the Lifta-Jerusalem Road. At the center stands Mayor Hussein Salim Al-Husseini of Jerusalem, identified by his distinctive walking stick. To his right are two unsuspecting British soldiers, Sergeant Frederick Hurcomb and Sergeant James Sedgewick, both from the 2/19th Battalion of the London Regiment, 60th Division. A man at the back holds a white flag, signaling the imminent surrender. The sergeants were taken aback by the unexpected encounter and initially refused to accept the surrender document. Fortunately, just in time, Brigadier-General CF Watson, commanding the 180th Infantry Brigade, arrived on the scene and accepted the document, marking the formal end of Ottoman rule in Jerusalem and the beginning of British occupation in Palestine. The Middle East, a region rich in history and cultural significance, had become a battleground during the First World War. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the region's history, as the tide turned in favor of the Allied forces. The image stands as a testament to the complexities of war and the intricacies of diplomacy, with the Mayor of Jerusalem and British soldiers coming together on the Lifta-Jerusalem Road to write a new chapter in the annals of history.
