During the First World War Smith faught as a Colonel and in May 1915 he was knighted 1915. In 1919 he was made Lord Birkenhead and also appointed Lord Chancellor. Date: circa 1916

Sir Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930), is depicted in this striking photograph taken around 1916. A prominent figure in British politics, Smith began his political career as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Walton, Liverpool, in 1906. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Smith answered the call to duty and served valiantly as a Colonel in the British Army. In May 1915, he was recognized for his contributions to the war effort with a knighthood. Following the war, Smith's political career continued to flourish. In 1919, he was bestowed with the title of Lord Birkenhead and appointed as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, the highest-ranking judicial office in the United Kingdom. This appointment marked the pinnacle of his political career, and he served in this capacity until 1922. Smith's military and political accomplishments are a testament to his dedication and service to his country. His leadership and commitment to justice earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the British public.
