EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the historic moment of the raising of the Royal George, a British warship that sank in the English Channel off Spithead, Portsmouth, in 1782. The Royal George was one of the most powerful ships of her time, serving as a flagship for Admiral Sir George Rodney during the American Revolutionary War. On August 29, 1782, the ship suffered a catastrophic collapse of her starboard gun deck, causing her to sink with the loss of over 800 lives. The photo print, circa 1840, captures the impressive engineering feat of raising the wreck of the Royal George, which began in 1838 under the direction of Sir William Symonds, the Chief Engineer of the Royal Dockyard. The process involved constructing a massive crane, known as the "Royal George Raising Engine," which was capable of lifting the ship's massive weight of over 3,000 tons. The image shows the ship's hull being raised incrementally, with the help of numerous workers and horses, as well as the intricate system of pulleys and ropes. The raised sections of the ship are visible, revealing the intricate details of the ship's construction and the damage sustained during the sinking. The successful raising of the Royal George was a significant event in maritime history, providing valuable insights into the construction and design of 18th-century warships. The ship was eventually taken apart and its timbers were used to construct the HMS Victory II, a replica of Lord Nelson's famous flagship, which is now a popular tourist attraction in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
