This image depicts the sixth scene from Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "Sadko," first performed in 1898. In this historical scene, Sadko, a legendary Russian merchant and musician, stands before the magnificent Palace of the King of the Ocean. The King, impressed by Sadko's musical talents, grants him the hand of his beautiful daughter, Volkhova, in marriage. However, their union is not meant to be. As the wedding ceremony comes to an end, Volkhova is transformed into a river, much to Sadko's shock and despair. This transformation is a result of a prophecy that foretold her fate as the personified goddess of the Volkhov River. The scene is filled with awe and wonder, as the palace and its inhabitants are submerged in the river, leaving Sadko alone on the shore. Rimsky-Korsakov's opera, based on a 12th-century Russian legend, is a rich blend of history, music, and mythology.
