EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from September 1916, Reinforcements of British infantry are shown moving in long, narrow columns towards the front lines during the First World War. The soldiers, dressed in heavy packs and equipment, march in a disciplined formation to minimise any damage that might be inflicted upon them by enemy artillery fire. The month of September marked a critical period in the war, with the Battle of the Somme reaching its peak. The British Expeditionary Force was making a desperate attempt to break through the German lines and gain ground, and reinforcements were essential to maintain the momentum of the offensive. The soldiers in this photograph are seen marching in a narrow column, with each man closely following the one in front. This tactic was employed to reduce the target area for enemy artillery, making it more difficult for them to inflict mass casualties. The long columns also facilitated better communication and coordination among the soldiers, ensuring a more effective advance. The image captures the grim determination of the British troops as they move towards the front lines, aware of the dangers that lie ahead. The narrow columns, while offering some protection against artillery fire, also made the soldiers more vulnerable to enemy machine gun fire. Despite this, they pressed on, driven by the knowledge that their presence on the battlefield could make all the difference in the outcome of the war. This photograph is an important reminder of the sacrifices made by the British infantry during the First World War, and the strategic thinking that went into their movements on the battlefield. It is a poignant testament to the courage and resilience of the soldiers who fought in the trenches, and the lengths to which they went to ensure the success of their mission.
