EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the R.100 Mooring Tower, a historic structure erected in 1928 at Howden, Yorkshire, England. The R.100 was a British airship designed for transatlantic service, an ambitious project that unfortunately never came to fruition due to the tragic events that followed the R.101 crash. The R.100, along with its sister ship R.101, were part of the Imperial Airship Scheme, a bold endeavor aimed at establishing regular airship passenger services across the Atlantic. The R.100 mooring tower was built specifically for the R.100, serving as a crucial component of the airship's infrastructure. Its towering height and robust design reflect the grand ambitions of the project. Alas, the R.101 met a devastating end on October 7, 1930, crashing during its trial flight, killing 48 people on board and four on the ground. As a result, the R.100 project was indefinitely postponed, leaving the mooring tower as a poignant reminder of what could have been. This photograph, taken in the late 1920s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when airships held the promise of a new era in transportation. The R.100 Mooring Tower stands as a testament to the ingenuity, ambition, and determination of the British people during a pivotal moment in aviation history.
