EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a young Princess Elizabeth (1926-2022), the future Queen Elizabeth II, in her Girl Guide uniform during World War II. The image, taken circa 1942, showcases the princess's dedication to the Girl Guides organization at a pivotal moment in history. The Princess, who would later ascend to the throne in 1952, is seen wearing the distinctive uniform of the 2nd Girl Guides, which includes a navy blue blouse, a brown skirt, and a navy blue neckerchief with a woggle. The necktie, adorned with the Girl Guides logo, is knotted around her neck, while the woggle, a small wooden bead on a cord, is worn on her left sleeve. The photograph also reveals the various badges on her uniform, each one representing different achievements and milestones in her Guiding career. Princess Elizabeth's involvement in the Girl Guides began when she joined the 1st Hitchin Company in Hertfordshire, England, in 1937, at the age of 11. The organization, which was founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1910, aimed to provide girls with opportunities for education, physical and mental development, and character building. The future monarch's dedication to the Girl Guides continued throughout her teenage years, even during the challenging times of World War II. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the young Princess Elizabeth's commitment to her community and her personal growth during a time of great adversity. It also highlights the important role that organizations like the Girl Guides played in shaping the lives of young people, including future leaders, during the 20th century.
