EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in biblical history as Israelite priests, bearing the Ark of the Covenant, walk outside the walls of the ancient city of Jericho. The year is approximately 1200 BCE, and the Israelites, led by Joshua, are on the verge of conquering the city as part of their divine mandate. The priests, dressed in linen garments and carrying the Ark on poles, lead the way, their faces set with determination and reverence. Behind them, the Israelite army marches in formation, ready to follow the divine instructions given by God through Moses. The city of Jericho, with its imposing walls and towers, looms in the background, a formidable fortress that has withstood countless attacks throughout history. The priests, carrying the Ark, are blasting trumpets, signaling the beginning of the siege. According to the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament of the Bible, the Israelites were instructed to march around the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, to march around the city seven times, blowing their trumpets on the seventh march. The walls of Jericho would then fall, allowing the Israelites to enter and conquer the city. This historical event holds significant religious and cultural importance for the Jewish and Christian faiths, and has been depicted in numerous works of art throughout history. The image serves as a reminder of the power of faith, obedience, and the unfolding of divine plans in human history.
