EDITORS COMMENTS
A Moment in Time: The Van Scheut Mission Building a Christian Church in the Philippines, 16th Century This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Van Scheut Mission in the Philippines, as missionaries work diligently to construct a Christian church in the heart of this vibrant and diverse Southeast Asian nation. Established in the late 16th century by the Belgian priest, Theophiel Verbiest, the Van Scheut Mission played a significant role in spreading Christianity throughout the archipelago. Theophiel Verbiest, also known as Verbiest S.J. (1587-1638), was a prominent Belgian Jesuit priest, scholar, and missionary. He arrived in the Philippines in 1605 and spent the remainder of his life devoted to the spread of the faith. Verbiest's influence extended beyond the Philippines, as he served as the Chinese Emperor's mathematics teacher and was instrumental in the establishment of the first European printing press in China. In this photograph, the missionaries are seen laboring to build a church, their determination and dedication evident in their focused expressions. The construction site is bustling with activity, as local workers and missionaries work together to erect the structure that would serve as a beacon of faith for the community. The lush greenery and clear blue sky serve as a striking backdrop to the scene, highlighting the harmony between the natural world and the human endeavor. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the Van Scheut Mission and the role it played in the spread of Christianity in the Philippines. The image invites us to reflect on the past, and to appreciate the enduring impact of the missionaries' efforts on the religious and cultural landscape of the Philippines.
