EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 1800 print, an officer of the 7th Regiment of Foot stands at ease on the left of his division, as the regiment is arranged in open column. The right of the formation is depicted in the foreground, with the officer and his men proudly displaying their blue uniforms adorned with red stripes and white lace. The officer carries a sword in his right hand, the traditional armament of infantry officers during this period. The uniform of the 7th Regiment of Foot closely resembles that of other British infantry regiments, such as the 23rd and 27th Regiments, which also featured red facings on blue coats. However, the 7th Regiment's distinctive yellow lace and the placement of the regimental number on the shoulder straps set it apart from its counterparts. The open column formation, with soldiers standing in rows with a space between each row, was a common tactical deployment during this era. The officer's division is depicted with its standards proudly displayed, adding to the regiment's regal appearance. Each soldier is shown carrying a sword and a dagger, reflecting the importance of close combat in the military tactics of the time. The meticulous attention to detail in this print allows us to appreciate the intricacies of the uniforms and the discipline of the soldiers, offering a glimpse into the visual splendor of the British Army during the late 18th century.
