EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intense moment from Act Four of Modest Mussorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov," as portrayed in a production from 1874. In this scene, Boris Godunov, played by the renowned bass singer Julius Liebig6, is seen suffering from another debilitating fit. Sensing that his end is near, Boris calls for his son Fyodor and declares him his legitimate successor, in an attempt to secure the future of the Russian throne. The historical background of this scene is significant, as Boris Godunov is a complex character in Russian history. He rose to power following the mysterious death of Tsar Ivan the Terrible's son, Ivan, in 1598. Boris ruled as regent for Ivan's young son, but eventually seized the throne for himself. However, his reign was marked by political instability and unrest, and he was eventually overthrown and killed in 1605. Mussorgsky's opera, first performed in 1874, is a powerful retelling of Boris Godunov's story. The composer drew on historical records and folklore to create a vivid and dramatic portrayal of Boris's reign and downfall. The opera's final act, depicted in this image, is a poignant and emotional moment as Boris faces the end of his rule and tries to secure the future for his son. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of Russian opera and the powerful performances of the past. The image of Julius Liebig6 as Boris, with his intense expression and the dramatic lighting, captures the essence of this complex and historic character.
