EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the daily routine at the Darenth Training Colony in Kent during the 1930s. Established by the Metropolitan Asylums Board in 1904, the colony was an extension of the existing Darenth Schools site, providing education, training, and care for adult mental defectives. The image shows a milking parlour, where residents were taught farming skills as part of their rehabilitation and work therapy. The poverty stricken conditions of the time are evident in the worn-out housing and simple farming equipment. The residents, dressed in shabby clothing, work diligently to milk the cattle in the dimly lit shed. Straw covers the floor, providing a meager insulation against the cold. The milk produced was used for the residents' nutrition and was also sold to local dairies, providing a small source of income for the colony. This photograph offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of life in a workhouse or asylum during the early 20th century. The history of the Darenth Training Colony is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those with mental health issues during this era, and the importance of providing adequate care and support.
