This powerful image captures the defining moment in the tumultuous history of the Protestant Reformation: Martin Luther, the German theologian and monk, standing firm before the formidable figure of Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521. With unwavering resolve, Luther declares "Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise, God help me" (Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders, Gott helfe mir), as he defends his views that would forever change the course of Western Christianity. The Diet of Worms was a significant assembly of the Holy Roman Empire, convened to address the religious and political unrest that had been brewing in Europe for decades. Luther, who had already gained a massive following with his Ninety-Five Theses, was summoned to appear before the emperor and the Catholic authorities to recant his writings.
