This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Crusades, as Saint Louis IX of France (1214-1270) receives an embassy from the Old Man of the Mountain, the leader of the Assassins, a mysterious and feared Islamic sect, at the siege of Acre in 1291. The Crusades, a series of religious and military campaigns sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church to recapture the Holy Land from Muslim rule, had been ongoing for over a century. Acre, a key Mediterranean port city, was the last major Christian stronghold in the region. Louis IX, who ruled France from 1226 to 1270 and is now revered as a saint, led the Seventh Crusade in an attempt to break the Muslim siege of Acre.
