EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, we see a young Leopold III, future King of Belgium (1934-51), playing with his siblings, Marie José (future Queen of Italy, 1876-1946) and their brother Charles (future King of Belgium, 1935-83), in a light-hearted moment captured in 1901. The three royal children, dressed in fashionable clothing of the era, appear to be engaged in a playful activity, their laughter and joy evident in their expressions. Leopold III was born on November 3, 1901, in Brussels, Belgium, to King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. He was the second son and third child in the family. His elder sister, Marie José, was born on January 4, 1876, and his brother, Charles, was born on October 10, 1903. The photograph was taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, a period of significant change in Belgian history. Leopold III's father, King Albert I, had ascended to the throne in 1909, following the death of his father, Leopold II. During his reign, Belgium underwent significant industrialization and modernization. Despite the joyful scene depicted in the photograph, the lives of the three siblings would be marked by tragedy and political turmoil. Leopold III would eventually succeed his father as King of Belgium in 1934, only to be forced into exile during World War II. Marie José would marry the future King of Italy, Umberto II, in 1930, but their marriage would be short-lived, and she would be exiled during World War II as well. Charles, the youngest sibling, would become King of Belgium in 1935, but his reign would be marked by political instability and controversy. This photograph, taken long before the challenges and hardships that lay ahead, offers a glimpse into a happier time in the lives of these three Belgian royals. It serves as a reminder of their childhood and the innocence and joy that once defined their lives.
