EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the iconic image of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum, in full military regalia. The Earl, who served as the British Secretary of State for War and the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is depicted here in his uniform from the 1st Battalion, The Royal Dragoons, which he joined in 1871. The photograph, taken by the renowned Victorian photographer Bassano, highlights the intricate details of Kitchener's uniform, including the gold braid, sword, spurs, and the numerous medals adorning his chest. Kitchener's military career began in earnest in the late 1870s, when he served in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Sudan Campaign. He gained international fame for his role in the relief of Khartoum in 1898, following the massacre of General Gordon. Kitchener's military prowess and strategic brilliance earned him the nickname "The Sphinx of the Nile." The photograph was taken in 1916, during World War I, when Kitchener served as the Secretary of State for War. Despite his advanced age, Kitchener continued to serve in a military capacity, and tragically, he lost his life during the sinking of the HMS Hampshire in 1916. This photograph is a testament to Kitchener's storied military career and his enduring legacy as one of Britain's greatest soldiers. The intricate details of his uniform, captured by Bassano's expert lens, offer a glimpse into the past and provide a reminder of the rich history of the British military.
