EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Jean Passerat, a renowned French writer and historian, deep in thought as he peruses an old parchment. Born in 1534 in Tours, France, Passerat was a prolific author and scholar, whose works spanned various genres including history, poetry, and philosophy. During his formative years, Passerat studied at the University of Poitiers and later at the Sorbonne in Paris. He was deeply influenced by the humanist ideas of the time and became a member of the prestigious Académie des Inscrits, a literary society that promoted the study of classical literature. Passerat's historical works are particularly noteworthy, as he was one of the first French historians to adopt a critical and objective approach to the past. His most famous work, "Histoire de France," was published in 1592 and covered the history of France from the Roman conquest to the reign of Henry IV. Despite his scholarly pursuits, Passerat was also a man of the world, and he served as secretary to several prominent figures, including the Duke of Anjou and the Duke of Mayenne. He was also a member of the Parlement of Paris, the highest court in the kingdom. This photograph, taken in the late 16th century, captures Passerat in his study, surrounded by books and papers, as he delves into the past to uncover the truth. With a quill pen in hand and a furrowed brow, he appears completely absorbed in his research, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. Jean Passerat's legacy as a writer and historian continues to be celebrated in France and beyond. His works remain an invaluable source of information about the history and culture of the early modern period, and his influence can be seen in the works of later historians and scholars.
