EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a pivotal moment in the relationship between Japan and Korea as the Korean Ambassador, Lee Wan-yong, arrives in Yokohama, Japan, in 1876 to sign the Treaty of Peace and Friendship. The treaty marked the formal end of hostilities between the two neighboring countries, which had been at odds since the late 16th century. The signing of the treaty was a significant step towards promoting peace and diplomacy between Japan and Korea, as well as opening up new opportunities for cultural and economic exchange. The image shows the Korean Ambassador, dressed in traditional Hanbok attire, being greeted by a group of Japanese officials and diplomats. The treaty signing took place on board the Japanese warship, the "Fuji," which is visible in the background. The treaty was signed on August 23, 1876, and was the first formal diplomatic agreement between the two nations. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship was an important milestone in the modern history of East Asia, paving the way for increased interaction and cooperation between Japan and Korea. It also marked the beginning of Japan's modernization and its emergence as a major player in international affairs. The treaty was a testament to the power of diplomacy in resolving long-standing conflicts and fostering peaceful relations between nations.
