This image depicts Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563-1611), a Dutch navigator, cartographer, and travel writer, who is considered one of the earliest Europeans to have extensively documented his travels in Asia. Van Linschoten's adventures began in 1583 when he embarked on a voyage to the East Indies as a crew member on a Portuguese ship. He spent the next several years exploring various parts of Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and the Moluccas. During his travels, Van Linschoten gathered an impressive collection of information about the people, cultures, and geography of Asia.
