EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majesty and grandeur of the reconstructed Palace of Sargon II at Dur-Sharrukin, also known as Khorsabad, in modern-day Iraq. The Palace, built in the late 8th century BC, was the royal residence of the Assyrian king Sargon II. In the mid-19th century, the palace was excavated by two pioneering French archaeologists, Paul-Émile Botta and Victor Place. Botta, a French consul in Mosul, began excavations at Khorsabad in 1843, unearthing the impressive Ziggurat of Shalmaneser III and the North Palace of Sargon II. Botta's work was groundbreaking, as it was the first systematic archaeological excavation in the Middle East. However, it was not until Place arrived in 1845 that the Palace of Sargon II was fully uncovered. Place continued Botta's work, focusing on the South Palace and the Lion Gate. The Palace of Sargon II is renowned for its impressive defences, including a massive outer wall and a series of gates. The palace's decorative reliefs and inscriptions provide valuable insights into Assyrian history and culture. This photograph, taken after the palace's reconstruction, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of the ancient Assyrian civilization. The Palace of Sargon II at Dur-Sharrukin stands as a testament to the rich historical heritage of Iraq and the important contributions made by Botta and Place in the field of archaeology. Their discoveries continue to inspire and inform our understanding of the ancient world.
