This evocative image captures the moment of arrival for immigrants as they disembark from a steamship at Castle Garden, New York, in 1884. Castle Garden, located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, served as the first immigration station in the United States from 1855 to 1890, preceding the more well-known Ellis Island. The scene is one of excitement and anticipation, as newcomers to America, many of whom were fleeing poverty and persecution in Europe, set foot on American soil for the first time. The police officers, dressed in their uniforms and standing at attention, ensure order and safety during the disembarkation process.
