EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Her Majesty Queen Mary, the wife of King George V, gracefully launches R.M.S. Queen Mary, her namesake, on September 26, 1934, at Southampton, England. Previously known as Cunard 534, this magnificent ocean liner was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world at the time, setting a new standard for transatlantic travel. The Queen, dressed elegantly in a long, white coat and hat, can be seen in the centre of the image, seated in a glass Royal Box, shielding her and the royal party from the heavy rain that fell during the ceremony. Surrounded by dignitaries and Cunard officials, she delicately touches the ship's bow with a silver champagne bottle, releasing a spray of water and officially christening the vessel. The launch of R.M.S. Queen Mary was a significant event in maritime history, marking the beginning of a new era in ocean travel. The ship was a testament to British engineering and design, and its size and luxurious amenities made it a symbol of opulence and sophistication. The vessel went on to serve Cunard Line for over three decades, carrying thousands of passengers across the Atlantic Ocean before being retired in 1967. This photograph captures a moment in time when history was made, and the grandeur of the occasion is evident in the regal presence of Queen Mary and the impressive backdrop of the newly launched liner. It is a reminder of the importance of maritime innovation and the role of royalty in shaping the world we live in today.
