EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of H.G. (Henry Winston) de Blowitz, a legendary English journalist and bohemian, in the early 20th century. Born in 1875, de Blowitz was known for his unconventional lifestyle and fearless reporting, which often put him at odds with the establishment. The image, taken in 1903, shows de Blowitz in his element, sitting in a dimly lit room adorned with books, papers, and various curiosities. His disheveled appearance, with wild hair and a thick beard, only adds to his bohemian allure. He gazes intently into the distance, as if deep in thought or contemplation. De Blowitz's career began in the late 1890s, when he started writing for various London newspapers. He quickly gained a reputation for his provocative and often scandalous reporting, which earned him both admirers and enemies. In 1903, he founded the tabloid newspaper, The Sunday Dispatch, which became known for its sensational headlines and investigative journalism. Despite his success, de Blowitz's unconventional methods and controversial reporting often landed him in hot water. In 1915, he was arrested for publishing a letter that contained a threat against the life of King George V. He was later acquitted, but the incident further solidified his reputation as a maverick journalist. Throughout his life, de Blowitz continued to push boundaries and challenge the status quo. He passed away in 1956, leaving behind a rich legacy as one of the most influential and controversial figures in English journalism history.
