Gustaf I Vasa: The Champion of Swedish Independence This historic print depicts the election of Gustaf I Vasa as the first elected monarch of Sweden in 1523, marking a pivotal moment in Swedish history. Born as Gustaf Eriksson in 1496, Vasa rose to prominence as a naval commander during the ongoing conflicts between Sweden and Denmark. In 1520, Vasa led a successful rebellion against the Danish king Christian II, who had ruled Sweden since 1513. Following the rebellion, Vasa was proclaimed as the new king of Sweden in 1523, securing the country's independence from Denmark. This momentous event marked the end of the Kalmar Union, which had united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under Danish rule since 1397. Gustaf I Vasa's election brought about significant changes to Sweden. He introduced a new constitution, the Regalian Style, which established the Swedish monarchy as an absolute monarchy.
