EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the raw power and intensity of war as a German 21cm Howitzer is put into action on the Romanian Front during the First World War. The image, dated January 1917, depicts the artillery piece in the midst of a barren and desolate landscape, with its crew diligently attending to their duties as the Central Powers forces advance towards the Sereth (Siret) River. At the time this photograph was taken, Romania had been a belligerent in the conflict since August 1916, initially receiving support from their Russian allies. However, following the Bolshevik Revolution and the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March 1918, Romania was left isolated and ultimately had no choice but to sign an armistice with the Germans in December 1917. The German Howitzer, a formidable and versatile piece of artillery, was a key component of the Central Powers' arsenal during this period. Capable of firing a 21-centimeter shell over a distance of 10,000 meters, it could devastate enemy positions with its impressive range and accuracy. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal realities of war and the devastating impact it had on the people and landscapes of Eastern Europe during the First World War." This photograph, with its historical significance and powerful imagery, is a valuable addition to any collection of World War I history. It offers a unique and compelling perspective on the events that unfolded on the Romanian Front, and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and hardships endured by the soldiers and civilians caught up in the conflict.
