EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the iconic image of Giuseppe Garibaldi and his beloved wife, Anita Garibaldi, née Collette, in 1860. The Italian patriot, born on July 4, 1807, in Nice, France, is renowned for his pivotal role in the Italian unification movement during the 19th century. Garibaldi's life was marked by a deep commitment to the cause of Italian independence. He served in various military campaigns, including the Five Days' Battle of Milan in 1848 and the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860. In this photograph, the 53-year-old Garibaldi is seen wearing a military uniform, exuding an air of determination and resolve. His wife, Anita, stands by his side, her gaze fixed on the horizon, embodying the unwavering support and courage of the women who played a crucial role in the Italian unification process. Anita, born in Brazil in 1821, met Garibaldi in Uruguay during the Paraguayan War in the late 1840s. They married in 1842 and remained together until her death in 1873. Anita's involvement in the Italian unification movement was significant; she served as a nurse, a spy, and even took part in military engagements. Her bravery and dedication to the cause earned her the moniker "The Lioness of Caxias." This photograph is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary couple who played such a vital role in shaping the history of Italy. Their story of love, courage, and commitment to their cause continues to inspire generations.
