EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the pivotal moment when Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), the Italian patriot and military leader, met with King Carlo Alberto (1798-1849) of Piedmont in March 1848. The meeting took place during the Italian Wars of Independence, a series of conflicts aimed at freeing various Italian states from the dominion of the Austrian Empire. Garibaldi, a charismatic figure who had already gained fame for his military exploits in South America, arrived in Palermo, Sicily, in May 1860, leading the "Thousand," a volunteer army, to overthrow the Bourbon monarchy and unify the island with the Kingdom of Sardinia. King Carlo Alberto, initially hesitant to engage in a war against Austria, was persuaded by Garibaldi's passion and determination to join the cause for Italian independence. The meeting between the two men took place in the Royal Palace of Turin on March 21, 1848. Garibaldi, dressed in his distinctive red shirt and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, is shown standing confidently before the king, who sits on his throne. The king, dressed in military uniform, listens intently as Garibaldi makes his case for joining the war. This photograph is a testament to the power of persuasion and the importance of unity in the quest for national liberation. The Italian Wars of Independence marked a turning point in Italian history, leading to the unification of various Italian states under the House of Savoy and the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. This photograph, taken circa 1848, is a significant historical document that captures the spirit of the Italian struggle for independence and the pivotal role played by Garibaldi and King Carlo Alberto in shaping the course of Italian history.
