EDITORS COMMENTS
December 1917: Flora Drummond Speaks Defiance from a Tank in Liverpool This evocative photograph captures the indomitable spirit of Flora Drummond as she addresses the crowds from atop a tank in Liverpool during the Christmas Truce of 1917. Flora Drummond (1873-1950), a Scottish suffragette and peace activist, was a prominent figure in the Women's Peace Crusade, which called for an end to the First World War. The Christmas Truce of 1917 was a spontaneous ceasefire that occurred along the Western Front on Christmas Day, allowing soldiers from both sides to meet in no man's land and exchange gifts and goodwill. The truce was a brief respite from the horrors of war and served as a powerful symbol of the desire for peace. Flora Drummond seized the opportunity to speak out against the continued violence and call for an end to the war. Dressed in a fur coat and hat, she climbed atop a tank that had been brought to Liverpool as part of a military parade. With a megaphone in hand, she addressed the cheering crowds, urging them to join her in her call for peace. The photograph is a testament to Flora Drummond's courage and determination in the face of war and the suffering it brought. Her words and actions served as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there were those who continued to fight for peace and human rights. This powerful image remains an important part of both Liverpool's and the UK's history, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit.
