EDITORS COMMENTS
Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762): A Masterful Sculptor of the French Baroque Period This image showcases the renowned French sculptor, Edme Bouchardon, in the prime of his artistic career. Born in 1698, Bouchardon was a pivotal figure in the French Baroque period, known for his exquisite sculptures that graced the royal courts of Europe. Bouchardon's talent was evident from an early age, and he was apprenticed to the renowned sculptor Jean-Baptiste Pigalle at the age of 14. He later studied under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, the director of the Gobelins Manufactory. Bouchardon's mastery of the art of sculpture was further honed during his travels to Italy, where he was deeply influenced by the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Alessandro Algardi. Upon his return to France, Bouchardon's sculptures quickly gained recognition, and he was appointed as the sculptor to the King in 1734. He created numerous works for the royal courts of France and Poland, including the monumental equestrian statue of Louis XV at Château de Chantilly and the stunning bust of Marie-Anne de Mailly, Marquise de Randon. Bouchardon's sculptures were characterized by their grace, elegance, and naturalism. He mastered the art of modeling the human form, capturing the subtle nuances of emotion and expression. His works were often imbued with a sense of movement and dynamism, as seen in his equestrian statues and figures in motion. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Edme Bouchardon, who continues to be celebrated as one of the greatest sculptors of the French Baroque period. His works can be found in museums and galleries around the world, including the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
