EDITORS COMMENTS
5-10 September: A Vibrant and Historically Rich Double Page Spread in a Young Person's Diary September's double page spread in this young person's diary brims with delightful illustrations that celebrate both the season and historical events. As autumn's crisp air begins to fill the atmosphere, the pages come alive with images of mushrooms, ripe and ready for picking, and children wading through shallow waters, fishing for trout. On the 5th, a young archer takes aim with an arrow, the stump of a tree serving as his target, while on the 6th, a crowd gathers around a cricket pitch, where a match between Australia and England is underway. A comic illustration of a cap-wearing cricket fan cheering enthusiastically adds a touch of humor to the spread. The 7th marks the anniversary of the Siege of Paris in 1870, commemorated by a drawing of a broken archer's bow and arrow, symbolizing the struggle and resilience of the French people during that time. The following day, a person is shown floating above the landscape in a hot air balloon, gazing at the picturesque autumnal scene below. The 9th brings us back to the seasonal theme, with a drawing of a fisherman casting his rod into the water, surrounded by an array of colorful mushrooms, or 'fungi,' as they are known in the 1880s. The month of September concludes with a young child holding a ripe, red apple, under a clear blue sky filled with fluffy white clouds and the heads of spectators peeking out from behind them, reminiscent of a comic strip. This double page spread in the young person's diary is a testament to the rich history, both seasonal and historical, that can be found in the 1880s.
