EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished figure of Edouard Millaud (1834-1912), a prominent French Jewish politician who served as Rhone Senator from 1880 to 1912. Born in Lyon, France, Millaud was a key figure in French politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Millaud's political career began in the 1860s when he became involved in local politics in Lyon. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the Jewish community and worked to improve their social and economic conditions. In 1880, Millaud was elected as a Senator for the Rhone department, a position he held for the next 32 years. During his tenure in the Senate, Millaud was known for his eloquent speeches and his commitment to progressive causes. He was a vocal supporter of women's suffrage, labor rights, and the separation of church and state. Millaud also played a crucial role in the Dreyfus Affair, a highly publicized antisemitic scandal that rocked French society in the late 1890s. Millaud was a leading figure in the movement to exonerate Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain falsely accused of treason. Despite facing antisemitic attacks and threats, Millaud remained steadfast in his convictions and continued to fight for justice and equality. His legacy as a champion of human rights and a defender of the Jewish community in France is still celebrated today. This photograph, taken in 1912, captures Millaud in his later years, with the wisdom and gravitas of a seasoned statesman. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the important role that individual voices can play in shaping history and advancing the cause of justice and equality.
