This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Dhuleep Singh, the last Sikh Maharaja of Lahore, as a young boy in 1837. Born into the royal Sikh dynasty, Dhuleep Singh ruled the Punjab region until the British annexation of Lahore in 1849. At the age of five, he was taken to Britain by the British East India Company, where he was raised as a Christian under the guardianship of the Queen Mother, Queen Victoria. The image of Dhuleep Singh as a boy, dressed in Western attire and holding a book, offers a poignant glimpse into his tumultuous life. The photograph, taken in 1893, reveals a man who appears both worldly and introspective, his gaze fixed on an unseen horizon. The intricate details of his clothing, the delicate folds of his turban, and the somber expression on his face, all serve to underscore the complex history of colonialism, religion, and power that shaped his destiny. Despite his early upbringing in England, Dhuleep Singh never fully embraced his new Christian identity. He continued to practice Sikhism in secret and later in life, he made several attempts to regain control of the Punjab. However, his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and he spent the remainder of his days in England, living out the rest of his days in relative obscurity.
