This poignant sketch, titled 'Death of the Prince Imperial: Spot Where His Body Was Found' by special artist Melton Prior, captures the panoramic view of the plain in South Africa where the tragic fate of the Prince Imperial, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, unfolded on May 1, 1879. The Prince and his topographical recording party had halted by a river to make coffee and take shelter in a native kraal. However, their momentary respite was shattered when they were ambushed by a force of around 30 Zulus. The Prince, who had been impetuously exploring the country despite the British army's concerns for his safety, was unable to mount his horse quickly enough to escape. His mother, Empress Eugenie, and the Duke of Cambridge had petitioned the British army to allow the Prince to join them due to his desire to contribute to the war efforts. The scene depicted in this sketch is a haunting reminder of the Prince's untimely demise. The panoramic view of the plain, with its vast expanse of land and seemingly endless horizon, adds to the sense of isolation and despair. The kraal, once a temporary shelter, now stands as a silent witness to the events that transpired within its walls.
